Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday’s official spokesman, Dustin Johnson, now has a six-pack of wins on the PGA Tour.
Johnson, playing in just his second tournament after returning from a back injury, birdied the 16th and 17th holes to rally for a one-shot victory at the FedEx St. Jude Classic in Memphis, Tenn. The win was the sixth of Johnson’s career and it made him the first player since Tiger Woods to win at least once in each of his first five years on Tour.
Johnson vaulted to the top of a crowded leader board that featured Rory McIlroy, the world’s second ranked player, with late birdies on Sunday, part of a final round 68 en route to shooting a 9-under 271. Johnson made an 11-foot birdie putt on the par 5 16th hole and calmly rolled in a nine-footer on No. 17 to take the lead.
With the win, Johnson, a Coastal Carolina alum and a long-time Myrtle Beach resident, moved to 10th in the Official World Golf Rankings and 10th on the Ryder Cup points list. Johnson has four top 10 finishes in nine PGA Tour events in 2012.
Johnson, who lived along the Grand Strand for nearly a decade, became the official spokesman for Myrtle Beach golf in the spring of 2011. Even before becoming Golf Holiday’s spokesman, Johnson was an unofficial ambassador for the community. A TPC Myrtle Beach logo has adorned his bag since he turned pro and he has never hidden his affinity for the area.
The win puts Johnson on the shortlist of favorites for this week’s U.S. Open at the Olympic Club in San Francisco.
As part of his work with Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday, fans have a chance to win a round of golf with Johnson at TPC Myrtle Beach in the “Golf for a Year” giveaway.
