One of Nation’s Top Prep Golfers Takes On & Conquers Myrtle Beach Golf Courses

Player Spotlight: Trent Phillips

This past weekend, True Blue Golf Club  and Caledonia Golf & Fish Club saw some of the best high school players in North America playing in The Palmetto High School Golf Championship. One of the highlights of the week was Boiling Springs’ Trent Phillips. Phillips, who won the Dustin Johnson World Junior Golf Championship in 2017, is the 90th ranked amateur in the world, and he showed why with his performance.

The Georgia signee shot a new tournament record on Friday, as he posted a 63 (-7) at Caledonia. Phillips shot a 1-under 71 at True Blue in the final round on Saturday. His two-day total of 134 (-8) was enough to earn Phillips The Palmetto individual title. Phillips will look to carry his momentum from The Palmetto through the rest of the year.

Phillips’ 134 total also helped Boiling Springs roll to a 14-shot victory in the team side of The Palmetto over second-place Frederica Academy. Boiling Springs’ triumph kept Frederica Academy from winning its second Palmetto Championship.

Phillips is the second University of Georgia golfer to compete in The Palmetto (The other, Harris English, currently plays on the PGA Tour). Phillips is the fifth-ranked junior in the country right now and is gaining competitive steam as his freshman year in college approaches.

The Palmetto’s host courses, True Blue Golf Club and Caledonia Golf & Fish Club, are ranked among the top 100 public courses in America. The Mike Strantz design at Caledonia, where Phillips shot 63, is ranked 29th on Golf Magazine’s list of the Top 100 You Can Play. On this same list, True Blue is ranked 77th.

Each design served as a formidable test for Phillips and his fellow competitors this past weekend. Caledonia is carved through the stunning South Carolina Lowcountry on the grounds of an historic rice plantation. True Blue offers a contrasting look with wide fairways, and waste bunkers in which you can ground your club.
