Classic Chronicles – Friday, 2:40 p.m.: Jackson Byrd in Position to Make Cut in PGA TOUR Debut, with Dad on the Cut Line
With his 3-under score through 36 holes, Jackson Byrd of Saint Simons Island, Georgia is in line to make a quantum leap in competitive achievement.
Less than three weeks ago, Byrd was standing on the 18th green at True Blue Golf Club just 30 miles down the road with his Frederica Academy high school teammates, celebrating his team’s win and his runner-up individual finish in the 2025 Keiser University College of Golf Palmetto Championship.
Today, he’s in the clubhouse with a strong chance of making the cut in his first-ever PGA TOUR event.
Just a few tee times ahead of him, five-time PGA TOUR winner Jonathan Byrd finished his second round at 1-under, hovering around the cut line with a chance of joining his son for weekend competition at The Dunes Club.
Jonathan is a South Carolina native and Clemson graduate, while amateur Jackson enrolls this fall as a freshman at Clemson. Father and son were awarded special exemptions this week into the 132-player field. Now, the Byrd Family hopes to be celebrating Mother’s Day Weekend together at the golf course.

Classic Chronicles – Friday, 1:21 pm: Higgs Surges to Clubhouse Lead
Gregarious and hilarious. Two terms often associated with Harry Higgs. But two rounds into the ONEflight Myrtle Beach Classic, Higgs is showing he’s also got some serious game.
And after topping his opening round 67 with a 5-under 66 in Friday’s Round 2, no one’s laughing at the clubhouse leader’s chances of taking home the trophy come Sunday afternoon.
Higgs was not in much of a joking mood by his second hole yesterday. On that par-4 11th, he had what he felt was a quality three-shot sequence that deserved a lot better than an 11-foot putt for par. Higgs almost let himself slip into “woe is me” mode.
But he made that par putt. And it proved a reassuring turning point, setting the stage for birdies on four of his next six holes.
“I don’t know if I would have been standing here (today) if I didn’t make that putt,” said a relieved Higgs in today’s post-Round 2 press session. “It was nice to see that go in, and then really it was pretty easy after that.”
Higgs has posted three wins on the Korn Ferry Tour, with two of those coming in May 2024 to boost him to exempt TOUR status for this season. A win Sunday would be his first ever on the PGA TOUR.

Classic Chronicles – Friday, 9:34 am: Silverman Birdie Train Starts at Waterloo
A rocky start to his second round didn’t last long for Canada’s Ben Silverman. After bogeying his opening 10th hole, Silverman bounced back with pars on 11 and 12 to keep the first two legs of “Alligator Alley” firmly in check. With its final leg, Silverman put it firmly in the rearview mirror.
No. 13, a monster par 5 that wraps around Lake Singleton at a right angle, is known as “Waterloo” for good reason. But after tucking his tee shot 275 yards to the right fairway and easily navigating the lake with his second shot to the left fairway, Silverman flipped a 73-yard wedge to 10 feet and converted the putt for what would be the first of four birdies in a five-hole stretch.
Silverman was out in 33, and with all pars on his second nine by early afternoon he stood at 7-under (T5) through 16 holes. Right in the mix. ...

Classic Chronicles – Friday, 8:55 am: Volunteer Central
Volunteers are the true heartbeat of any PGA TOUR event, and the ONEflight Myrtle Beach Classic is no exception. A touch of rain early this morning may have delayed the start of Round 2 play, but it certainly hasn’t dampened the spirits of the legions of folks who’ve happily lent their time and efforts to support the Grand Strand’s first-ever TOUR event that’s now in its second year.
Volunteerism is a core principle of the TOUR, and vital to the successful operation of this event. Their support covers a wide spectrum – gallery management, competition support, hospitality, operations, tournament services, player services … the list goes on.
What you see here is their Command Central, the hub for check-in and marching orders on any given day, located right next to The Dunes Club’s No. 13 green. When these volunteers aren’t busy, it’s also a fantastic vantage point for watching the action.
To our ONEflight Myrtle Beach Classic volunteers, we offer our heartfelt thanks to the more than 1,300 of you who make it possible for the TOUR to experience “The Golf Capital of the World!” ...

Classic Chronicles – Thursday, 3:55 pm: Olesen Brings Symmetry, in More Ways Than One
Denmark’s Thorbjorn Olesen is at it again.
The reigning Dunes Golf & Beach Club course record holder made that mark in the final round of last year’s Classic, punctuating that 10-under 61 by coolly sinking a slick, downhill birdie putt on 18. Thursday Olesen picked up right where he left off momentum-wise, finishing his 7-under first round of 64 with par saves at the par-4 8th and par-3 9th.
Last year’s record-breaking final round gave Olesen a T6 overall finish; this year’s opening round performance leaves him just one stroke off the tournament lead currently held by Canada’s Mackenzie Hughes.
“Two really (good) up-and-downs to finish the day off, but before that I thought I played really solid,” said Olesen in summing up his satisfaction with today’s round.
“Yeah, probably the best I’ve played this year, I would say.”
Walking off 9 green with Olesen, his caddie shared their delight with today’s result by tossing a ball each to young Daniel Clark, 5, and his brother Samuel, 3, of Pittsburgh, PA. They were watching greenside with parents Nathan and Christina Clark, who were married at The Dunes Club in 2016.
Nine years later, they got to share their love of golf - and connection to this venue – in a surprise way that left big smiles on the faces of each member of the Clark clan.
Not a bad way to end the day. ...
